In the Spring Term parents and guardians will be sent a letter explaining what we are doing about sun protection and how they can help. We give reference to Nursery Registration Form/ welcome pack and the policies and procedures.

All the staff will read ' Cancer Research UK's Sun smart Guidelines for Nurseries and Pre-schools 2004', explaining why sun protection is so important and giving information on harmful UVA rays and the dangers of sunburn.

3.2.       Premises

3.2.1. Fire safety

The Fire procedures for Forton Nursery have been drawn up using the regulatory reform (fire safety) order 2005. These can be accessed on the internet at www.communities.gov.uk

The designated person for fire safety policy is Liz Bowen (and Sophia Murray when designated person absent)

The register is kept on top of the filing cabinet and can be accessed by all the staff in case of an emergency

Fire safety officer takes the register out with them if the smoke alarm goes off

The fire safety officer also takes the red folder containing emergency contact numbers with them which can be found in the top draw off the filing cabinet

If the smoke alarm goes off the children are escorted out of the building via a fire exit to the fence (at the furthest point away from the nursery or fire) alongside the grassed area of the playground

If a fire is discovered but the smoke alarm has not engaged then the person/persons discovering the fire will blow a whistle which is located on the hook on the kitchen dresser again the children will be escorted out of the building to the designated area.

Fire practise should be carried out in the first week of each half term and logged into the fire practise date sheet in the kitchen, dates and times should vary to allow for all possibilities during the nursery day. The designated fire safety person will ensure that it is carried out as part of their duties

Smoke alarms are tested monthly and the results are recorded on a fire alarm check list

The fire alarms are the type that beep when they require new batteries and new batteries replaced immediately

When parents and visitors are in nursery they are notified verbally where the fire exits are located for example during the Christmas play etc

Fire exits are always kept clear of obstructions

The fire extinguishers are located by each fire exit (foam and water)

There are 3 smoke alarms which are situated

In the main room

In the kitchen

In the small room

Matches are kept on the premises on the top shelf of the kitchen dresser

Fire risk assessments are carried out and control measures implemented

All visitors sign the visitor's book and will be accounted for in the event of a fire

If a fire occurs the Ofsted will be informed as it is an incident

3.2.2. Emergency evacuation

If an emergency occurs which requires the evacuation of the building a whistle will be blown

All children will be escorted out of the building by at least 1 member of staff via the nearest accessible fire exit and assemble on the grassed area of the playground

All staff exit the building NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO ENTER THE BUILDING UNTIL IT HAS BEEN DESIGNATED SAFE TO DO SO BY FIRE SAFETY PERSON

The nursery will be checked by the fire safety person ensuring that the nursery is clear of children checking adjoining rooms and toilets

The fire safety person will take the register and emergency contact information (red folder) and the phone

The fire safety person will telephone the fire brigade detailing the address and the reason for calling the emergency services

A member of staff will call the register checking that all children staff and any visitors are accounted for

The staff will work as a team to keep the children together and supervised at all times

In the event that the playground becomes hazardous the children will be escorted to Forton church and their parents will be contacted using the registration documents and mobile phone
